Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the CAS, Czech Republic, EU
Position: Distinguished Chair at Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague and Professor of Physical Chemistry at Charles University, Prague and Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic.
Specialization: Computational and theoretical chemistry, non-covalent interactions and their applications in chemistry and bio disciplines.
At the NANOCON´18 conference Professor Pavel Hobza will present an invited lecture at the session A: "Electronic Structure of Fe(II) Phthalocyanine in the Isolated State and Adsorbed at Pristine Graphene and N-doped Graphene: Theoretical and Experimental Study".
Personal Background and Education:
Pavel Hobza (*1946, Přerov, Czech Republic) received his MS (1969) from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University and PhD (1974) from the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
In 2000 he became the head of the Center for Complex Molecular Systems and Biomolecules, in 2005 started to act as the head of the Center for Biomolecules and Complex Molecular Systems, and in 2012 he became the leader of the Center for Excellence, entitled "Managing the Structure and Function of Biomolecules at Molecular Level”. Pavel Hobza has developed at the research centres a science school dealing with non-covalent interactions and their applications. He was also a guest professor at the Université de Montréal (Canada) and Technische Universität München (Germany).
Research Interests and main results:
Professor Hobza and his research team works on noncovalent interactions and their applications in bio- and material sciences, databases of accurate interaction energies and on In silico drug design. His scientific work includes the discovery of improper hydrogen bonding, which fundamentally changed the view to hydrogen bonding, the explanation of the role of stacking interactions in DNA and proteins and the role of dispersion energy in macromolecules. At present, he deals with non-covalent interactions and their applications in the chemistry, biodisciplines and material sciences. The main current project is "In Silico Drug Design” and "Non-covalent interactions in adsorption of organometallic molecules at 2D-surfaces.
Publication activity and Awards:
Pavel Hobza has co-authored 4 books, more than 500 papers and 35 review papers in peer-reviewed journals, his H-index (WOS) is 100, and Sum of Times Cited is more than 36 000. He is the most cited Czech scientist.
He was awarded by “Highly Cited Researcher” in chemistry in 2014 – 2016 (Thomson Reuters, later Clarivate Analytics), Schrödinger Medal in 2017 (World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists), “Česká hlava” in 2008 (Czech government), Praemium Academiae in 2007 (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) and. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2005) and Learned Society of the Czech Republic (2006). He also serves in Editorial Boards of Chemistry – An European Journal, Phys Chem Chem Phys, Chem Phys Chem and Chemical Reviews.
